Ever wondered what a day in the life of a Direct Provider is like? Ella Kurst is here to share her exciting and fulfilling journey at JtC. Since joining the team in January 2024, Ella has been making a significant impact on the lives of her clients. Her journey to JtC began at the College of Saint Benedicts and Saint John's University, where she graduated in December 2022 with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. Her passion for working with children was ignited during her year as a Medical Administrative Assistant at a Speech and OT clinic, where she had the opportunity to shadow various therapy sessions. This hands-on experience led her to pursue a career where she could work directly with kids, bringing her to JtC.
A Dynamic and Rewarding Role
For Ella, no two days are the same, and that unpredictability is what she loves most about her job. Each day starts with picking up clients and bringing them to the center to work on their goals through engaging and enjoyable activities.
Ella's day starts early. She begins by reviewing the day's schedule and preparing for her clients' arrival. Each client has a unique set of goals and preferences, so Ella tailors her plans to meet their individual needs. Around 8 AM, she picks up her clients and brings them to the center. The morning routine is designed to be engaging and productive. They start with greeting routines and some warm-up activities that set a positive tone for the day.
Morning Sessions: Balancing Fun and Learning
The mornings are filled with a variety of activities that blend learning and play. Ella works on the clients' goals through interactive sessions. For instance, they might play educational games that promote cognitive skills or engage in arts and crafts that enhance fine motor skills. Ella emphasizes the importance of incorporating both preferred and non-preferred activities to ensure a balanced approach. She often uses a strategy where the client picks an activity, followed by an activity chosen by her. This method keeps the clients motivated and involved.

Lunchtime: More Than Just Eating
Lunchtime is another valuable part of the day. Ella and the clients eat together with peers and other providers. This time is not only for eating but also for practicing social skills, hygiene routines, and daily chores. They work on skills like using utensils properly, cleaning up after meals, and interacting politely with peers. It's a great opportunity for Ella to observe the clients in a social setting and provide gentle guidance as needed.
Afternoon Adventures
After lunch, the afternoons are reserved for outings and hands-on experiences. Ella takes the clients to various exciting places like splash pads, parks, and even the zoo. These outings are designed to be both fun and educational. They help clients generalize the skills they've learned in the center to real-world settings. For example, a trip to the zoo might include lessons on animal names, behaviors, and habitats, while also giving the clients a chance to practice patience, listening, and following instructions in a busy environment.
Individualized Strategies and Challenges
Ella's primary responsibility is to ensure that each client is progressing toward their goals. She uses a variety of strategies to support her clients. One effective technique she uses is a timer for transitions. If a client is reluctant to move from a preferred activity to a non-preferred one, Ella sets a timer to provide a clear, visual cue for when it's time to switch. This helps manage expectations and reduce anxiety around transitions.
However, the job isn't without its challenges. Ella often encounters situations where a client is having a difficult day and familiar regulation strategies aren't working. During such times, she remains patient and tries different approaches, always aiming to understand and meet the client's needs.
Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Progress
Like any job, being a Direct Provider comes with its challenges. Ella sometimes faces days when her clients struggle despite her best efforts with various regulation strategies. However, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Seeing her clients make progress is incredibly fulfilling. Ella recalls a client who initially had a vocabulary of fewer than five words. With consistent support, this client can now communicate effectively, either verbally or using an AAC device. Helping children find their voice, in any form, is what Ella finds most rewarding.
Creating Memorable Experiences
One particularly memorable experience for Ella was a day at the lake with a client who was initially afraid of water. With patience and encouragement, she helped the client feel comfortable and even enjoy paddle boarding. This experience not only boosted the client's confidence but also turned a non-preferred activity into a fun and anticipated one. Seeing the smiles and excitement on her clients' faces made that day unforgettable for Ella.
Commitment to Continuous Learning
Ella believes in the importance of continuous learning and development. She values the knowledge and insights shared by her coworkers, including Direct Providers, Team Leads, and Supervisors. The regular trainings provided during Team Lead meetings have also been instrumental in enhancing her skills and professional growth.
Advice for Aspiring Direct Providers
For those new to the role, Ella's advice is to never hesitate to ask questions or seek help. Some days can be overwhelming, and it's essential to reach out for support when needed. Collaborating with other Direct Providers can provide fresh perspectives and solutions to challenges.
Looking Ahead: Future Goals
Ella's professional goals include obtaining a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She has been accepted into the program at Saint Cloud State University and will begin her studies this fall while continuing her work at JtC. She aspires to become a valuable resource for clients with communication devices or speech delays, helping them develop new techniques and familiarity with their devices.
Ella Karst's journey at JtC is a testament to her dedication and passion for working with children. Her ability to turn challenges into opportunities and her commitment to her clients make her an invaluable member of the JtC team. As she continues to grow in her role, Ella looks forward to making an even greater impact on the lives of the children and families she serves.
